Free Lunch Disappointment

The people at the Michoacan House have been telling me all week about the free pozole lunch offer, but today when the time came, there was no free pozole, only one lousy little "chepo" and a cup of atole!

When I told one of the people "Hey, this chepo looks and tastes an awful lot like a tamal"  he said "well, yes, but we use only the youngest and most tender corn."  (Give me a break!)

This thing was pretty small, too--about half the size of any other tamal I've ever had.  But the main thing is that after all those promises--There Was No Pozole!   And I had been telling anyone who would listen, all week, about the friendly and generous folks from Michoacan and their free lunch.  I'm glad nobody that I told about it showed up, though.  It would have been embarassing.

These Mexicans love to play their childish tricks on the poor, innocent tourists!

Mr. Nero

Yesterday afternoon and evening there were a number of fellows dressed up in costumes that I had not seen before.  It seems to be the fashion to cover yourself with gold or silver spray paint!  The policeman and the fellow in the top hat were especially good at interacting with the crowd, shaking hands and so forth.  The policeman was pretty funny, blowing his whistle and pointing out imaginary "crimes."  The guy with the top hat, I thought, looked a lot like Willie Wonka from the Chocolate Factory, but he had a sign identifying himself as "Mr. Nero"--I have no idea who Mr. Nero is, maybe I will google it on the internet to try and find out.

Last night's entertainment was Senor Coconut and his Band--the program says they come from Germany and Chile--and they were quite good.  There was a saxophonist who played different sizes of the instrument, trumpet, trombone, bass, two sets of marimbas, and a drummer.  The singer had a sort of a cowbell-looking thing that he banged with a stick.

Here is another picture of me with my little friends from down the hill, getting ready for Halloween.  Also two pretty girls and a young man from one of the universities who interviewed me (on video tape!) for their English class.

Getting ready for Halloween

The neighbors say that lots of kids come by asking for treats on Halloween, and the owner of the campground told me they even come in and knock on the doors of the motorhomes!  I am going to put on a mask and sit by the gate in a folding chair and pass out candy.  This could be the best Halloween ever!!

Here are some more pictures of some of the the events.  Also the Swiss couple that I have become friends with and the girls who went with me to the Huapanguera.

Huapango

Last night I went to see the "Huapangeada," which was an sort of a music and folkloric dancing exhibition.  The music is quite lively and always includes a violin.  The dancing has a lot of foot-stomping action, and I like it because it seems like very happy music.  You can see some examples on the "Youtube" if you search for "huapango"

Two little girls, Fatima and Cyntia (12 and 9 years old), the daughters of the lady who runs the little store down the hill, accompanied me to the show.  They don't get to see many of the events because their mom has to work late in the store and there is no one to go with them and make sure they stay safe.  So, anyway, we go some pizza on the way back home and I think they had a good time.

Their mother is going to let me sit behind the counter in the store to watch the baseball game tonight.  (Go Rangers!)

I have been walking around town collecting postcards from the little kiosks that are set up and operated by students from the College of Communications.  When you collect a full set of 32 postcards, they give you a prize!  The prizes are t-shirts with Sancho Panza, Don Quixote, and Dona Dulcinea (Don Quixote's girlfriend) printed on them with no heads, so when you wear the t-shirt it appears as if your head is on the body of one of these famous literary characters.  I've completed one collection and only lack about 5 more postcards to be able to get a second t-shirt for my wife.

The problem is that the students require me to sing, dance, tell jokes, and complete other tasks before they will present me with the postcards.  So far I have had to tell every joke I know, sing the "YMCA" song, and hug five random people on the street in order to qualify!

more activities

Here are some more pictures of female acrobats from Quebec and a bunch of people from France that dress up like old-fashioned clowns and are lifted into the air by a crane as they play music with drums and bells.  I've decided to stay here until November 7th when the Cervantino ends.  Then I plan to go to the Monarch Butterfly sanctuary, since it is pretty close.

The three Mexican States which have been invited to sent representatives to this year's Festival are Michoacan, Queretaro and Chihuahua.  The Michoacan folks are giving a free lunch (pozole--a kind of soup or stew) to everyone who shows up on Oct. 31.  The "Queretaro House"  will be passing out free gastronomic samples this Friday at 4 o'clock.  Finally today I found the Chihuahan "embassy" and guess what?  Those cheap tightwads are not giving out any free food at all!  Just some literary events like poetry readings and some other boring cultural stuff.  They are not coming back next year if I have anything to say about it!

Here are just some pictures I've taken in the last few days.  The fellow posing with my by my camper spent last night here with his wife and sister-in-law.  He owns a gym in Zamora, Michoacan and told me I could p[ark next to his house anytime I am passing through his town.

I took the picture of the young man in the purple shirt to show what seems to be a very popular hairstyle these days.  You try and make it point straight up on the top of your head!

These others are just some pictures of the Cervantino celebration that's going on around town.  The lady selling the Argentinian empanadas has to ask her customers to hold her sign while she reaches in the basket for the food and makes change, so her customers all take turns holding the sign and I had my picture taken with it.  (I tried to help her out by yelling "Hot empanadas, Argentinian style!  Beef and cheese!  Only twelve pesos!")

At noon today there was an opera performed in the public market--pretty interesting idea.  First the guy in the fish stall started singing and then a lady sang and then the fellow from the vegetable stand.  I couldn't follow the story very well, but at some point they all threw confetti in the air and I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be a wedding.

Don Quixote let me hold his sword while we had our picture taken.

Gene Byron Casa-Museo

I visited another ex-hacienda where they used to separate silver and gold from all the rocks they dug up in the old days.  This place was abandoned and falling apart when, in about 1955, it was purchased by a Canadian lady and her Spanish husband.  The lady was named Gene Byron and was a designer of art objects and a painter.  There are a lot of pictures on the walls that she painted and a lot of brass and tin and pewter candelabras and other objects that she 'designed' but I think other folks probably produced them.  I drove my motor home to the museum and had no trouble getting there, but I got lost on my way home and found myself wandering the tunnels beneath the city and worried that I was going to run into something because of the height of my vehicle.

What's new

Here are a few photos.  There is a picture of me and my new girlfriend and another picture of me with a pirate—I asked him if he was supposed to be Francis Drake or Henry Morgan or somebody, but it turns out he is impersonating the fictional Captain Jack Sparrow from the Disney movie!
Then there are three little boys who decided to have a parade.  I didn’t take a very good picture—one photo has the flags but no drum, and the other shows the drum but no flags.
I went to see an ex-hacienda built near a water source where they used to separate out the gold and silver ore from the rest of the worthless rocks they hauled up from the mines.  The grounds are very nicely done, with different styles of gardens.  In one of the pictures of the hacienda’s interior, I made sure to stand in a place where the mop bucket and vacuum cleaner would be included in the photo.
Then here is a picture of a couple burros I saw on my way out to buy the newspaper yesterday morning and a photo of a fruit market at night that I thought turned out to be kind of arty-looking.
