Salvatierra

I am in Salvatierra, Guanajuato for three or four days.  They are not really promoting tourism effectively, in my opinion.  I got here Saturday and asked for the location of the tourism office.  It is closed until Monday.  Then a nice fellow who owns a photography store gave me a little map with sites of touristic interest designated on the map.  Very helpful, but guess what?  All the sites of touristic interest are closed until Monday.  My thought is this--if any tourists ever did come here, they would likely be Mexicans from Queretaro or Mexico City.  They would come on the WEEKEND. 

Anyway, there is some sort of festival going on here with dancing and carnival rides for the children and fireworks and musical bands marching through the streets.  I don't know what it is all about but the folks are having lots of fun.  I am parked on the street across from a bicycle repair shop where the owner is letting me connect to his electricity at night.  I tried to buy two new white-wall tires from him but it turns out that today's 26-inch rims are different (smaller) than the ones from fifty years ago when my bicycle was new.  It turned out to be fortunate that I was parked by his shop because one of my truck tires had a bad valve stem and was almost flat this morning.  He has a compressor, so we put air in the tire and I drove to a repair shop. (cost about $5.75 to fix.)

Here are some pictures.  I think what they do with those giant bottle-rockets is to heat up the metal bars with a propane torch so that when it gets hot enough, all the fuses are lit simultaneously and they all shoot off at once!  The arches at the entrances to the fiesta area are quite cleverly done, with all kinds of fruits and vegetables and even loaves of bread.

Estoy en Salvatierra, Guanajuato, durante tres o cuatro días. En realidad no son la promoción del turismo con eficacia, en mi opinión. Tengo aquí el sábado y pidió que la ubicación de la oficina de turismo. Está cerrado hasta el lunes. Entonces, un buen tipo que es dueño de una tienda de fotografía me dio un pequeño mapa con los sitios de interés turístico designadas en el mapa. Muy útil, pero ¿adivinen qué? Todos los sitios de interés turístico están cerradas hasta el lunes. Mi pensamiento es éste - en su caso los turistas nunca he venido aquí, lo más probable sería mexicanos de Querétaro y la Ciudad de México. Venían en el FIN DE SEMANA.


De todos modos, hay una especie de festival pasando aquí con paseos baile y el carnaval para los niños y los fuegos artificiales y bandas musicales marchando por las calles. No sé lo que se trata, pero la gente está teniendo mucha diversión. Estoy estacionado en la calle frente a un taller de bicicletas donde el dueño me deja conectar con su electricidad en la noche. Traté de comprar dos neumáticos nuevos blancos de la pared de él pero resulta llantas de 26 pulgadas de hoy son diferentes (más pequeño) que hace las de cincuenta años, cuando mi bicicleta era nuevo. Resultó ser la suerte de que me estaba estacionado por su tienda porque uno de los neumáticos de mi camioneta tenía un vástago de la válvula mal y era casi plana esta mañana. Él tiene un compresor, así que pusimos el aire en el neumático y me dirigí a un taller de reparación. (Cuesta alrededor de $ 5,75 a solucionarlo.)


Aquí hay algunas fotos. Creo que lo que hacen con los gigantescos cohetes de botella es el calentamiento de las barras de metal con un soplete de propano para que cuando se calienta lo suficiente, todos los fusibles se enciende al mismo tiempo y todos disparan al mismo tiempo! Los arcos en las entradas a la zona de fiesta son muy hábilmente hecho, con todo tipo de frutas y verduras e incluso piezas de pan.
