Sunday I drove about thirty miles from Aguascalientes to the town of Calvillo, which has recently been designated as another one of Mexicos "Pueblos Magicos" or Magical Towns.  The Pueblos Magicos are places a strong sense of tradition is maintained and they are, many times, places that have some historical significance.  The park, or plaza, in Calvillo has recently had some work done on it.  A big sign related that the cost of the improvements was about 25 thousand dollars (300,000 pesos).  Twenty five thousand dollars evidently pays for a lot of improvements at Mexican labor rates, because the park looked very nice.
   The Calvillo area is Mexico's biggest and most important center for the production of guavas (guayabas).  Here is some advice from Dona Martha:  When buying guavas, look for the ones with a rosy, pinkish color because they are the sweetest ones.
   There was a parade perhaps a hundred or more horses in Calvillo (and a few mules).  After they passed by, I made sure to watch where I stepped when crossing the street.   Those men who ride horses in Mexico are known as "caballeros,"  caballo being the Spanish word for horse.  Caballero is also a generic term that means something like "gentleman" in English.  Later in the day, perhaps having been influenced by the parade, and temporarily having forgotten that a caballero is just kind of a fancy word that means the same as "hombre," or man, I saw a sign advertising tennis shoes for caballeros.  I know that there are specialized shoes for running and forbasketball and for soccer, so I spent several minutes trying to imagine what sort of tennis shoes would be suitable for horseback riding!
    In Calvillo also, they boast of their church, which has the second-largest cupola, or dome, "of its type" in Latin America.  I am not sure of what the cupols's type is, but I think that qualification must be important, because off all the cupolas of "all types" it is probably nowhere near the second largest.  It is pretty big, though, and the inside of the church is quite elaborate, with a lot of gold leaf on the walls and so forth.  I did not take any pictures of the interior, because there was one mass after another the whole time that I was in town.
   Later, I drove into central Aguascalientes and found the place where there used to be a hostel run by an acquaintance of mine.  The hostel is closed, and the storekeeper next door said thathe thought my friend had moved to the Dominican Republic.  But my other friend, Juan Jose, in Zacatecas had told me that the fellow had opened a new hostel in a different building several blocks from the old one.  So I don't know what the truth is.  Sometimes when Mexicans don't know the answer to a question, they will invent some sort of story.

Domingo me llevó a unos cincuenta kilómetros de Aguascalientes a la ciudad de Calvillo, que recientemente ha sido designado como otro de los Méxicos "Pueblos Mágicos" o Pueblos Mágicos. Los Pueblos Mágicos son lugares se mantiene un fuerte sentido de la tradición y son, muchas veces, los lugares que tienen un significado histórico. El parque o plaza, en Calvillo ha tenido recientemente algún trabajo en ella. Un gran cartel relató que el costo de las mejoras era de unos 25 mil dólares (300.000 pesos). Veinticinco mil dólares evidentemente paga por una gran cantidad de mejoras en las tasas de mano de obra mexicana, porque el parque se veía muy bien.

   El área de Calvillo es el centro más grande e importante de México para la producción de guayaba (guayabas). He aquí algunos consejos de doña Martha: En la compra de guayabas, busque los que tienen un color rosado, rosado, ya que son los más dulces pequeños.

   Hubo un desfile quizás cien o más caballos en Calvillo (y unas cuantas mulas). Después de pasar, me aseguré de ver donde me acerqué al cruzar la calle. Esos hombres que montan caballos en México se conocen como "caballeros", caballo es la palabra española para el caballo. Caballero es también un término genérico que significa algo así como "gentleman" en Inglés. Más adelante en el día, tal vez después de haber sido influenciado por el desfile, y temporalmente haber olvidado que un caballero es sólo una palabra elegante que significa lo mismo que "hombre",  vi un anuncio de "tenis de caballero. Sé que hay zapatos especiales para correr y el baloncest y por el fútbol, ​​por lo que pasó varios horas tratando de imaginar qué tipo de zapatos tenis sería adecuado para montar a caballo!

    En Calvillo también, la gente tiene orgullo de su iglesia, que tiene la segunda mayor cúpula o domo "de su tipo" en América Latina. No estoy seguro de qué tipo la cupula es, pero creo que la calificación debe ser importante, porque de todas las cúpulas de "todos los tipos", es probable que en ninguna parte cerca de la segunda más grande. Es bastante grande, sin embargo, y el interior de la iglesia es bastante complicado, con un montón de oja de oro en las paredes y estatuas y cosas asi. No tomé ninguna foto del interior, porque no había una misa tras otra durante todo el tiempo que estuve en la ciudad.

   Más tarde, me dirigí a Aguascalientes central y encontró el lugar donde solía haber un albergue dirigido por un conocido mío. El albergue está cerrado, y el dueno de una tienda cerca me dijo que mi amigo se había trasladado a la República Dominicana. Pero mi otro amigo, Juan José, en Zacatecas me había dicho que el hombre había abierto un nuevo albergue en unas cuadras de distancia del negocio ya cerrado.. Así que no sé cuál es la verdad. A veces, cuando los mexicanos no sabe la respuesta a una pregunta, van a inventar algún tipo de historia.
