I took a few pictures on Thursday.  The picture of the statue is in Independencte Park.  There has been a park at this location since the year 1610, but it has only been called Independence Park" for about the last hundred years, since the revolution.  Last time I was here, two years ago, this park was being renovated, and it looks very nice.  You may notice the cannons placed at the four corners of the base of the statue.  The barrels of these cannons looked very short.  I wondered if they were functional.  The fellow sitting next to me on the park bench, however, seemed to think that they had been used by Panch Villa's troops to bombard the city from the hilltop called "la Bufa" which overlooks Zacatecas.  You will see a picture of la Bufa.  It is a big rock formation, which I think takes its name from the supposed resemblence to a wine sack.
   Across the street from Independence Park is the Casa de Cultura, or House of Culture.  This is the big building with the clock on the pediment.   Every town of any size seems tp have a Casa de Cultura, where young people come to familiarize themselves with various arts.  Inside the Casa de Cultura, I found an exhibit if calaveras, or masks made in the form of a skull.  These were still on display, having been placed there in conjunction with the Day of the Dead, which more or less corresponds with Halloween.
   I include a couple pictures of the Cathedral.  Construction began in 1718 and the north tower was completed in 1904.  The main facade is decribed as "exuberant" baroque, and the statuary is the work of indigenous craftsmen.
   I was able to make the acquaintance, here in Zacatecas, of a nice lady who has a background in television production in the United States, but has been living in Mexico for the past eight years or so.  She is involved in the production of films that can be seen on the Internet and concern themselves with various art forms like painting and dance and so forth.  But also some other subjects like horsemanship and bicycle touring.  The documentary videos are bilingual.  Sometimes the audio commentary is in Spanish with English subtitles, and sometimes the other way around.  You can see this work at www.mexitv.com.  The idea is to make money by promoting tourism and culture, and I think she is working on finalizing some sort of arrangement with the local branch of the UNAM (Autonomous National University of Mexico).  She has a pretty nice furnished apartment right in the center of the city, with two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bath, and access to a rooftop patio.  The rent is something under three hundred dollars per month, which seems quite reasonable.
   On my way home yesterday, I did not take one of the "Morelos" buses, but instead boarded a bus that was bound for Fresnillo, about forty miles north.  I knew that, to get to Fresnillo, you have to pass by the gas station where I'm parked.  To my surprise, when I thought that the driver was going to tell me how much the fare was, he instead asked me "How much do they charge you?"    So, of course, I replied "Half price!  Six and a half pesos."   Tomé algunas fotos el jueves. Se ha producido un parque en este lugar desde el año 1610, pero sólo ha sido llamado Parque de la Independencia "durante los últimos cien años, desde la revolución. Las barricas de estos cañones se veía muy corto. Me pregunté si eran funcionales. El hombre sentado a mi lado en el banco del parque, sin embargo , parecía pensar que había sido utilizado por las tropas Panch Villa para bombardear la ciudad desde la cima de una colina llamada "la Bufa", que da a Zacatecas. Verá una imagen de la Bufa. Se trata de una formación de roca grande, que creo que lleva su el nombre de la resemblence supone que un saco vino.
   Al otro lado de la calle del Parque de la Independencia es la Casa de Cultura, o la Casa de la Cultura. Este es el gran edificio con el reloj en el frontón. Todas las ciudades de cualquier tamaño tp parece tener una Casa de Cultura, donde los jóvenes llegan a familiarizarse con las diversas artes. Dentro de la Casa de Cultura, me encontré con una exposición si calaveras o máscaras hechas en la forma de un cráneo. Eran todavía en exhibición, después de haber sido colocado allí en conjunción con el Día de los Muertos, que corresponde más o menos con Halloween.

   Tuve la oportunidad de hacer que el conocimiento, aquí en Zacatecas, de una agradable señora que tiene experiencia en la producción de televisión en Estados Unidos, pero ha vivido en México durante los últimos ocho años. Está involucrada en la producción de películas que se pueden ver en Internet y se ocupan de varias formas de arte como la pintura y la danza, etc. Pero también algunos otros temas como la equitación y el cicloturismo. Los videos documentales son bilingües. A veces, el comentario de audio es en español con subtítulos en inglés, ya veces al revés. Usted puede ver este trabajo en www.mexitv.com. La idea es hacer dinero mediante la promoción del turismo y la cultura, y creo que ella está trabajando en la finalización de algún tipo de acuerdo con la sección local de la UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). Ella tiene un apartamento amueblado muy bonito en el centro de la ciudad, con dos dormitorios, sala, comedor, cocina, baño, y acceso a un patio en la azotea. El alquiler es de algo menos de 300 dólares al mes, lo que parece bastante razonable.
   De camino a casa ayer, no tomé una de las "Morelos" Autobuses, sino que subió a un autobús que se dirigía a Fresnillo, a unos cuarenta kilómetros al norte. Sabía que, para llegar a Fresnillo, usted tiene que pasar por la estación de servicio donde estoy estacionado. Para mi sorpresa, cuando pensé que el conductor iba a decirme lo mucho que la tarifa era, en su lugar me preguntó: "¿Cuánto cobras?" Así que, por supuesto, me respondió: "A mitad de precio! Seis y medio de pesos".
