Saturday I went to Plaza San Fernando to see a group of four Swiss “mimes” who do street performances.  They dress up in bright neon-green costumes that look kind of like the “HazMat” suits that are worn by people who clean up spills of dangerous chemicals and so forth.  They had a fellow who played drums and the kind of co-ordinated their movements with his striking the drums.  It turned out that the event also attracted some other people who seem to like to dress up in costumes and go out in public.  The ghoulish “day of the dead” fellows were just strolling around and I snapped a picture of them.  They stopped and we talked a bit and I had one of them take my picture with the other one.  The other fellow, dressed up like Don Quixote, was just standing in one place and, as I watched him for a few minutes, a number of people walked up and posed for photos standing next to him.

Sábado fui a la Plaza de San Fernando a ver a un grupo de cuatro suizos "mimos" que hacen espectáculos de calle. Ellos se visten con trajes verdes brillantes luces de neón que parecen algo así como el "materiales peligrosos" trajes que son usados por las personas que limpian los derrames de productos químicos peligrosos y así sucesivamente. Tenían un tipo que tocaba la batería y el tipo de coordinación de sus movimientos con sus golpes de los tambores. Resultó que el evento atrajo también a algunas otras personas que parece que les gusta vestirse con trajes y salir en público. La macabra "día de los muertos" compañeros eran sólo pasear y me tomó una foto de ellos. Se detuvieron y hablamos un poco y tuve uno de ellos sacarme una foto con el otro. El otro, vestido como Don Quijote, estaba de pie en un lugar y, cuando lo vi por unos minutos, un número de personas se acercó y posó para las fotos de pie junto a él.

Tonight, Sunday, the Swiss couple (my neighbors here at the trailer park) and I attended the performance of the Queretaro (State) Philharmonic Orchestra.  It was quite a performance!—Dance, Music, and a history lesson all in one.  The theme was the Mexican War of Independence, along with the Revolution.  It was quite a spectacle, the best performance, I think, that I have seen so far.

Esta noche, el domingo, la pareja suiza (mis vecinos aquí en el parque de casas rodantes) y yo asistimos a la actuación de la Orquesta de Querétaro (Estado) Filarmónica. Fue todo un espectáculo!-Danza, Música, y una lección de historia, todo en uno. El tema fue la Guerra de la Independencia de México, junto con la Revolución. Fue todo un espectáculo, el mejor rendimiento, creo yo, que he visto hasta ahora.

Esta noche, el domingo, la pareja suiza (mis vecinos aquí en el parque de casas rodantes) y yo asistimos a la actuación de la Orquesta de Querétaro (Estado) Filarmónica. Wynton Marsalis

Last evening I went to see Wynton Marsalis and the “Jazz at Lincoln Center” group.  I guess they call themselves that no matter if they are in Lincoln Center (which I think must be in New York City) or Guanajuato or wherever they are.  The piano player was pretty good and they had a guy (Jerrod Grimes, I think his name was) who was a very talented tap-dancer.  There were drums and trumpets and trombones and saxophones and probably some other stuff—oh, a big acoustic bass of course, it wouldn’t be jazz without that, would it?

Then, at noon today there was music in the bandstand (or “kiosk”) in the Union Garden.  It was billed as percussionists and it turned out that the marimba was a big part of the show.  These guys were from Michoacan.  To perform one of the numbers they all sat on wooden boxes about the size of orange crates.  The boxes had round holes cut in the backs of them, with microphones adjusted so they were right next to the holes.  Then the musicians all started slapping on the fronts of the wooden boxes with their hands.  I am not sure of the name of this musical instrument.

I include a couple of pictures of interesting vehicles, including a scooter with a roof on it and the smallest beer delivery truck I’ve ever seen.

Anoche fui a ver a Wynton Marsalis y la Jazz at Lincoln Center "del grupo. Supongo que se llaman que no importa si están en el Lincoln Center (que creo que debe estar en Nueva York) o Guanajuato o donde quiera que estén. El pianista era bastante bueno y que había un hombre (Jerry Grimes, creo que se llamaba) que era muy talentoso bailarín de claqué. Había tambores y trompetas y trombones y saxofones y probablemente algunas otras cosas-oh, un bajo de gran acústica, por supuesto, no sería el jazz sin eso, ¿verdad?
Luego, a mediodía de hoy había música en el quiosco de música (o "kiosco") en el Jardín Unión. Fue descrito como percusionistas y resultó que la marimba fue una parte importante del espectáculo. Estos chicos eran de Michoacán. Para llevar a cabo uno de los números que todos se sentaron en cajas de madera del tamaño de cajas de naranja. Las cajas tenían agujeros redondos cortados en la parte de atrás de ellos, con los micrófonos ajustado por lo que fueron junto a los agujeros. A continuación, los músicos Todo comenzó golpeando en los frentes de las cajas de madera con sus manos. No estoy seguro del nombre de este instrumento musical.

Vallenato

There were plenty of seats last night for the show.  I guess everybody shows up the first night and the last night, but in between times it is not so crowded.

Last night’s music was provided by the Colombian first prize winners in the category of “Vallenato”  music.  I don’t know what that is all about, but maybe it is music from the Valles or valleys.  There were three percussionists—one guy had the big stand-up ‘Ricky Ricardo’ type of drums, another fellow had a metal tube-like instrument about the size and shape of a Quaker Oats box that he was beating with a wooden stick, and the third was a fat guy sitting in a chair with a metal bowl between his knees.  Then there were guitar, bass guitar, accordion, and vocalist.  Well, there were two vocalists, really.  The first guy did about five songs and then another guy came out to sing.  (I wish I had taken a picture of the first one, because he looked just like the gangster Phil Leotardo on ‘The Sopranos’ television show.)  

Había un montón de puestos ayer por la noche para el espectáculo. Supongo que todo el mundo se muestra la primera noche y la noche pasada, pero en medio de veces que no es tan lleno de gente.la música de la noche anterior fue proporcionado por los ganadores del premio colombiano por primera vez en la categoría de "Vallenato" música. No sé lo que tiene que ver, pero tal vez es la música de los Valles o valles. Había tres percusionistas, un tipo tenía la gran stand-up 'de Ricky Ricardo tipo de batería, otro compañero había un instrumento metálico de tubo sobre el tamaño y la forma de una caja de Quaker Oats que estaba jugando con un palo de madera, y el tercero era un tipo gordo sentado en una silla con un tazón de metal entre las rodillas. Luego hubo guitarra, bajo, acordeón, y el vocalista. Bueno, hubo dos vocalistas, de verdad. El primer tipo hizo cerca de cinco canciones y luego otro hombre salió a cantar. (Ojalá hubiera tomado una foto de la primera, porque se veía como el gángster Phil Leotardo en el programa de 'Los Soprano' de la televisión.)

During the afternoon, I took a little walk around to locate “Los Pastitos” (also know as the Frog Park).  There are going to be some free events t6here, mostly consisting of electronic music.  I’d never been to that particular park before and found that it is right next to another large and pleasant park with benches and fountains (non-functioning, of course) and trees and plants.  I met a nice couple from Alabama, Gord and Susan, who have lived here for four years.  We had a nice talk for about a half an hour or so.  (They say the corn fungus is quite tasty, and recommended making a soup out of it.)

I also dropped off my laundry and bought some ice-cube trays and took care of some other stuff today, but nothing very exciting.  Oh, I also found a place in the market that sells pirated dvd movies for forty cents (5 pesos)!

Durante la tarde, tomé un poco de caminar para buscar "Los Pastitos" (también conocido como el Parque de la rana). Va a haber algunos eventos gratuitos t6here, en su mayoría compuesto por música electrónica. Yo nunca había estado en ese parque en particular antes y que se encuentran que es justo al lado de otro gran parque y agradable con bancos y fuentes (que no funciona, por supuesto) y los árboles y plantas. Conocí a una buena pareja de Alabama, Gord y Susan, que han vivido aquí durante cuatro años. Tuvimos una charla agradable para alrededor de una media hora más o menos. (Dicen que el hongo del maíz es muy sabrosa, y recomendó hacer una sopa de ella.)
También se redujo de mi ropa y compró algunas bandejas de cubitos de hielo y se hizo cargo de algunas otras cosas hoy en día, pero nada muy emocionante. Ah, también encontré un lugar en el mercado que vende películas piratas de DVD de cuarenta centavos (5 pesos)!
