Valle de Anton

I am in Valle de Anton, Panama.  It is about two hours from Panams City, I guess and it is in a mountain valley at quite a high altitude.  The climate is very agreeable.  I have met a fellow this morning who has lived here for the past seven years and comes from Memphis, Tennessee.  He seems to have plenty of money and has about twelve acres just down the road where he owns a business that sells concrete blocks and other building materials.  He says I can park my vehicle on his property while I fly out to the Indian Territory to look for my old friend.

A lot of rich Panamanians who live in the city have second homes here in El Valle.  It appears to be quite a prosperous place and there is a fair bit of construction going on.

I drove just about all day yesterday, except for the two and a half hours it took to get across the border.  First I had to buy insurance (fifteen dollars for a month), then go across the street and upstairs to get the official seal stamped on the insurance receipt, then get my passport stamped (the line was extremely long for this and I paid a twenty-dollar bribe to jump ahead of the line) then get the vehicle import authorization and have the RV inspected and fumigated.  But it was a lot more complicated than I make it sound because there are no signs or instructions to let you know what you have to do or in what order to do it.  There are not even signs to tell you where you can or cannot park while you are trying to get all this other stuff done!

Anyway, the roads were really pretty good in Panama, too, and it seems to be cleaner and better organized (except for the border) than some other places I have been.
