I know a lot more about Antigua's famous Holy Week Processions than I knew a week ago..   Good Friday is the day that they have more of them than any other day.  There were four of them, and the timing of them overlapped so that there were costant processions from four in the morning on Friday until six in the morning on Saturday.

The tunics worn by the participants are purple up until Friday, then Friday and Saturday they wear black.  Sunday there will be only one small procession and participants will be in their regular clothing (although I'd expect they will dress nicely for the occasion).  I've got one picture here of a fellow who must have forgotten what day it was because he's just wearing regular clothes on a Friday.

The carpets (alfombras) that are made in the street can have a base of either sawdust or pine needles.  The ones with sawdust take a lot of work and effort and use stencils to form the elaborate designs.  The ones with pine needles can be thrown together in a couple of hours, apparently, but the money they save by not buying bags and bags of colored sawdust is spent on other stuff like flowers.

Cuatro de ellos, y el momento de ellos están comprometidos para que hubo procesiones constante de cuatro de la mañana del viernes hasta las seis de la mañana del sábado.

Las túnicas usadas por los participantes son de color púrpuras hasta el viernes, y el viernes y el sábado visten de negro. El domingo habrá sólo una pequeña procesión y los participantes estarán en su ropa regular (aunque yo esperaría visten muy bien para la ocasión).  

Tengo una foto aquí de un compañero que debe haber olvidado qué día era porque sólo viste ropa regular el viernes.

Las alfombras que se realizan en la calle pueden tener una base de aserrín o agujas de pino. Con aserrín mucho trabajo y esfuerzo y usar plantillas para formar los diseños elaborados. Con agujas de pino puede construirla

en un par de horas, al parecer, pero el dinero que ahorre al no comprar bolsas y bolsas de aserrín de colores es gastado en otras cosas como las flores.

Aquí está también una foto de Nelson Lunding, que trabaja en diferentes lugares alrededor de la ciudad tocando el piano y es un muy buen muchacho, a pesar de su aspecto amenazador.

Here are some pictures from Lake Atitlan, also some women washing clothes and a picture of Omar, the fellow in the orange shirt who is an expert on fixing brakes and clutches.  The young fellow in the blue shirt is named Jason and he seems to be a good-hearted young man who has fallen in with bad companions, because he spends most of the day sniffing glue.

El muchacho en la playera azul se llama a Jason y él parece ser un hombre joven de buen corazón, que ha caído con malos compañeros, porque pasa la mayor parte del día oliendo pegamento.

Here are a few pictures of a church and monastery that was constructed between 1701 and 1717.  Then, just a few months after it was completed, an earthquake destroyed the whole thing.  I don't think, in all the times I have been to Antigua, that I ever visited this one before.  It is kind of hidden behing the market and the bus station.

I spent yesterday at Robin's house.  He doesn't have a computer, so I am posting all of his photos in albums on my Facebook page, where he will be able to access them from any cyber cafe.

We had a great time on Saturday.  Robin and Wendy and I took the kids to a zoological park called "Auto Safari Chapin" where you drive your vehicle through the park and look at the animals.  Danny (just turned thirteen) was a little bit scared and kept saying "Roll up your window!  Roll up your window!" even when we were looking at some of the animals that are vegetarians and do not eat people.  We were cautious with the lion, though, and did not shoot it with the water pistol.  Then after that there was a section where you could walk through and look at smaller animals and there was an enclosed aviary where you could look at different types of birds.  And then after that we spent an hour or so in the swimming pool, so it was really a lot of fun and I think the kids really enjoyed themselves.
   Then Sunday was the procession of the "Templo de San Bartolome Becerra" which seems to be one of the most popular ones for visitors from the capital to attend.  The newspaper said they were expecting about 500,000 people to come to Antigua for this procession, which began at about seven in the morning and concluded at midnight, taking a long and circuitous route through the city.  It passed by on a cross street about half a block from where I was parked for the day, and people were packed shoulder to shoulder at about ten in the morning!
   Sunday was also Saint Patrick's day and I happened to have my camera with me as I passed by Reilly's Irish Tavern.

Tuvimos un gran tiempo el sábado. Robin y Wendy y yo llevamos a los niños a un parque zoológico llamado "Auto Safari Chapín" donde usted maneja su vehículo a través del parque y mira a los animales. Danny (de trece anos) estaba un poco asustada y era diciendo "ruede para arriba de la ventana! Ruede para arriba de la ventana!"incluso cuando estábamos buscando en algunos de los animales que son vegetarianos y no comen a la gente. Sin embargo, éramos cautelosos con el León y no disparar con la pistola de agua. Entonces después de había una sección donde usted podría recorrer y mirar animales más pequeños y hubo un aviario encerrado donde usted podría mirar diferentes tipos de aves. Y entonces después de pasó una hora o así en la piscina, por lo que fue realmente muy divertido y creo que a los niños realmente se divirtieron.

Luego el domingo fue la procession del "Templo de San Bartolome Becerra" que parece ser uno de los más populares para los visitantes de la capital asistir a la procesión. El periódico dijo que esperaban unos 500.000 personas a venir a Antigua para esta procesión, que comenzó en unos siete de la mañana y concluyó a la medianoche, tomando una ruta larga y sinuosa a través de la ciudad. Pasó sobre una calle a media cuadra de donde yo estaba estacionado para el día, y personas estaban repletos de hombro a hombro en unos diez de la mañana!

El domingo fue también el día de San Patricio y me pasó que mi cámara conmigo, como pasó por la taberna irlandesa de Reilly.

Here's a picture of Christopher Marquez, 13 years old.  I first met Chris and his family when he was six.  And here are a couple of his nieces.  And a little fellow taking a break from participation in the Chidren's Procession.

Parking is apparently going to be a big problem here in Antigua durinning to ask ang Easter Week.  I'm planning to ask a friend of mine, who owns a bit of land just outside town, if I can leave my RV on his ranch for that week.

Estacionamiento al parecer va a ser un gran problema aquí en Antigua durinning pedirle ang Semana Santa. Estoy planeando pedirle a un amigo mío, que posee un poco de terreno a las afueras de la ciudad, si puedo dejar mi RV en su rancho para esa semana.

I am afraid my memory is such that I am not able to relate all that has happened in the six weeks since my arrival in Guatemala, but the night I got here was a memorable one.  A friend saw my vehicle rolling past his establishment and he jumped up out of his chair and bid me to pull over in a no-parking zone out in front of his business.  We chatted for a while and then he said, since it was kind of a slow night, that he would close down his shop and that we should collect one of our mutual friends and celebrate my arrival properly.  So he and I, along with a couple of other fellows, piled into my RV and traveled five blocks or so to First Avenue.

On second thought, that story might be better left untold.

Me temo que mi memoria es tal que no soy capaz de relacionar todo lo que ha ocurrido en las seis semanas desde mi llegada a Guatemala, pero la noche que llegué aquí fue una experiencia memorable. Un amigo vio mi vehículo rodando más allá de su establecimiento y saltó de su silla y me Tire encima en una zona no-estacionamiento frente a su negocio oferta. Charlamos por un rato y entonces me dijo, puesto que era la clase de una noche lenta, que él iba a cerrar su tienda y debemos recoger a uno de nuestros amigos mutuos y celebrar mi llegada correctamente. Entonces, él y yo, junto con un par de otros compañeros, se acumularon mi RV y viajó cinco cuadras más o menos a la primera Avenida.

Pensándolo bien, esa historia podría ser mejor dejar incalculable.
